Recommended Herbicide for sesame
Herbicides are chemical compounds used to control unwanted plants, commonly known as weeds. In sesame cultivation, their strategic application is of paramount importance for both field health and optimizing yield.
Weeds are fierce competitors with sesame plants for essential resources like sunlight, water, and soil nutrients. Untreated weed growth can significantly stunt sesame plant development, leading to weaker plants and reduced biomass. Herbicides effectively eliminate or suppress these competing weeds, ensuring that the valuable resources are primarily available to the sesame crop.
Herbicide don’t just reduce or eliminate weeds, they enhance good crop establishment, improved yield quality and facilitate field management
It’s challenging to find herbicides specifically designed for sesame because it’s a broadleaf plant. However, research is ongoing to identify more effective options. Currently, a limited number of pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides are recommended for controlling grassy weeds and some broadleaf weeds in sesame fields.
Glyphosate and paraquat can be used as burn-down herbicides during land preparation to eliminate existing weeds.
Here are a few herbicide application options:
Option 1
Combine a pre-emergence herbicide like pendimethalin (750g/ha) with a burn-down herbicide such as Glyphosate or paraquat if there’s minimal weed presence. Follow up with quizalofop-ethyl (40g/ha) as a post-emergence herbicide 15-20 days after sowing.
Option 2
Apply a pre-emergence herbicide like pendimethalin (750g/ha) alongside a burn-down herbicide like Glyphosate or paraquat for light weed infestations. Use clethodim as a post-emergence herbicide 15-20 days after sowing. Important note: Do not use clethodim once the sesame plant begins to flower.
Option 3
Utilize a pre-emergence herbicide such as pendimethalin (750g/ha) mixed with a burn-down herbicide like Glyphosate or paraquat if weed establishment is low. Then, apply haloxyfop as a post-emergence herbicide 15-20 days after sowing.
